The jungle railway track was built in stages between 1910 and 1930. During the war long stretches of track were removed by the Japanese for use on their Thailand-Burma railway (the Death Railway).From Kuala Kerau to Kuala Lipis. The jungle closes in on the railway. We cross some large muddy brown rivers and it is more hilly.- The daytime train (Train number 14 Gemas to Wakaf Bahru and #15 in the opposite direction) is supposed to have 1st, 2nd and 3rd class seats but only 2nd class (superior class) seemed to be available on my trips. The carriage is comfortable enough with good legroom and air-conditioning.Raffles Hotel:  The incomparable Raffles Hotel, Singapore, a little colonial island in a sea of modern high-rise blocks.   A suite at Raffles:  This is a Grand Suite in the main building, room 339 / 340 with sitting room, bedroom, bathroom and private veranda...     (Left) Raffles hotel lobby...  (Right)  The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel:  If you can't afford to stay there, at least have a 'Singapore Sling' in the famous Long Bar.  The bar was originally located in the ballroom, a single-storey extension built in 1915 on the front of the hotel where the driveway is now.  The Long Bar was first moved from one side of the ballroom to the other, then moved again in 1989 when the hotel was refurbished and the ballroom demolished.  It's now located at the rear of the hotel in a modern block constructed in 1989. Top choice in Penang:  Eastern & Oriental Hotel... If you like Raffles, try another of the Sarkies brothers' hotels, the equally historic Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Georgetown, Penang, equally historic but a bit cheaper at around 150 for a double room.  It's grand, well-located with gardens to the rear backing the sea.

Yes.  All long-distance trains in Malaysia & Thailand are reservation compulsory, and tickets always include a seat or sleeper reservation on a specific date & train.  You cannot hop on and off without a reservation.  Malaysian train reservations open 30 days before departure (it used to be 60), Thai trains open 60 days before departure.  One exception, no reservation is necessary or possible for KTM Komuter trains.From Kuala Lipis to Kuala Krai. This is where the best scenery can be found. Huge rivers, the colour of strong English tea, and spectacular limestone hills around the town of Gua Musang.

I would suggest that KTMB should consider (for the Kuala Lipis-Kuala Krai daytime sector only) adding an observation carriage with panorama windows and an open air viewing deck for (mostly foreign) tourists who I expect would be willing to pay more. With slick marketing from the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia could create another unique attraction to draw in visitors.

It runs from Tumpat, near the Thai border just north of Kota Bharu in Kelantan state down to Gemas in Negeri Sembilan where it joins up with the west coast line which runs all the way from Singapore to Bangkok via Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Recently (July 2011) I rode on the Jungle Railway from Gemas to Wakaf Bharu (the station for Kota Bharu) , a train journey of about 500km lasting 9 1/4 hours.- For sleeper trains (Train numbers 26 & 28 Gemas to Wakaf Bahru and 27 & 29 in the opposite direction) there is a choice of first and second class beds or regular seats. Personally I see no point in making this journey at night since the whole point is to appreciate the view. Ok perhaps you are thinking that a sleeper will save you having to pay for a hotel room but with quality budget hotel prices in Malaysia being so reasonable there will not be a huge difference. Last time I travelled on a sleeper (in Vietnam) I didn't get a wink of sleep. At my age it is better to travel during the day, enjoy the view and get a good night's sleep in a hotel room with a private bathroom.You can travel in either direction, northbound or southbound.  You can stop off where you like for as long as you like.  You don't have to do the whole trip, the train is great just for travel between Singapore & KL, or between KL & Penang.

The jungle train is travelling through the jungle from Gemas to Tumpat, which is near Kota Bahru (10 km). If you want to make that trip, you have to do South to Gemas. Maybe you can stop for a night in Malakka, which is a very interesting town with its colonial history You can travel by train from Kota Bharu to Singapore on the 'Jungle Line' which train passes through the heavily forested Cameron Highlands. This is one of South East Asia's great train journey, taking around 17 hours to complete the first part of the train journey to Johor Bharu to catch the shuttle train to Singapor

  5. g south from Wakaf Bharu were a group of middle aged Malay ladies with sacks full of dried fish, onions and eggplants which added to the colour and fragrance of the carriage. They got off at Jerantut which, being about as far as you can possibly get from the sea in Malaysia, is probably a good place to command a high price for dried fish.

In a fast moving train with dirty windows which do not open and thick vegetation at the trackside it is not easy to take good photographs. Many tourists sit or stand in the vestibule areas at the ends of each carriage with the doors open which can improve your chances of getting some good photos provided you are careful not to fall out.   2. Malaysia's Jungle Line - 13/10/2017 UPDATE. Malaysia's Jungle Line is the most exotic of the train trips in Malaysia. It will take you through the jungle and up the east coast of Malaysia. It is also the most uncomfortable train ride, but it's only a one day trip, so no real hardship
  3. The Shuttle Timur is a series of popular daily services along the East Coast Line or more popularly known overseas as the Jungle Railway between Kuala Lipis and Tumpat. It travels through the dense tropical rainforest of Malaysia, offering easy access for locals staying at kampungs in the eastern states of Pahang and Kelantan.. The Shuttle Timur stops at all stations and halts along the line.

To help you see the wood for the trees, I have shaded the trains I'd suggest for a Singapore to Bangkok journey (or vice versa) with stopovers in Kuala Lumpur & Penang (Butterworth).  You'd go Singapore to KL on one day using the shaded trains, KL to Butterworth (for Penang) on another day, then Butterworth to Bangkok on another day using the shaded KTM Komuter train to Padang Besar and Thai sleeper train overnight to Bangkok.  But there's no reason why you shouldn't use other trains if you like - For example, I have suggested the 08:05 train from KL to Butterworth (Penang), but there's no reason why you shouldn't take a later train instead.  The shading is just a suggestion!
  6. Thai border staff may want to see evidence of 10,000 baht in cash (who carries $300 in cash on them these days??) though in my experience they may only ask if you look at all down-at-heel.

  CONTACT ME   |    PRIVACY POLICY    |    TRAVEL BLOG    |    ABOUT ME Unfortunately, the Singaporean and Malaysian governments reached an agreement in 2010.  The historic station in Singapore closed on 30 June 2011, and taking a train from this wonderful building is now a thing of the past.  Trains now start/terminate at Woodlands, just south of the causeway to Malaysia, far less convenient for travellers and a totally backward step in transport terms.  Sadly, in Singapore it seems they know the value of office blocks and shopping centres but not of city centre railway connections!  From 1 July 2011 you have to take a taxi or the MRT (mass transit metro) plus a bus to Woodlands Train Checkpoint to pick up the trains to Malaysia there.  Malaysian and Singaporean border control are co-located at Woodlands, so at least this saves the long stops for border control en route, cutting journey time.  At least it's planned to preserve, rather than demolish, the old station building.  As it used to be:  There's a good look round Singapore's railway station in this video or see this panorama photo inside Singapore station.  Map showing location of Singapore's old railway station

Butterworth is the station for Georgetown on Penang Island.  Ferries shuttle between Butterworth & Georgetown/Penang every 10 minutes, taking 15 minutes, see the Butterworth & Penang section below.Trains 40-43 = Ekspres Selatan (Southern Express) trains.  Locomotive + comfortable air-con carriages, Superior (2nd) class only.  No catering. Yes of course, you can stop off wherever you like for as long as you like.  But no, you cannot buy an open ticket and hop on and off trains at random without a reservation.  There is no such thing as a Singapore to Bangkok ticket, you must buy a separate ticket for each individual train, and each ticket comes with a specific seat or berth number on a specific date on a specific train.  You can buy all your tickets in advance online or buy them at the station as you go along, it's up to you.  If there are seats still available (as there usually are), you can buy tickets right up until the train leaves.Trains numbered 29XX = KTM Komuter trains =  Modern air-conditioned electric local trains, 2nd class only.  No reservation necessary or possible.

- The first and last rows in each carriage (rows 1 and 15) are bulkhead seats and there are no windows. Unless you want to stare at a wall for 10 hours it is better to avoid them.After you have experienced the Jungle Railway you should try the West Coast Line and, if you are feeling rich, what better way than to travel on the ultra luxurious Eastern & Oriental Express?  

KTM Intercity. KTM Intercity is a diesel-hauled rail service than runs on a single-track along the West Coast Line between Johor Bahru and Gemas and along the East Coast Line between Gemas and Tumpat. KTM Intercity trains travel up to 110 km/h on a metre gauge rail line. There is only one type of KTM Intercity train service, Ekspres, which stops at all stations of the line In Thailand, SRT ticket offices are equipped with the SRT computer reservation system and can can sell you tickets for any mainline train anywhere in Thailand

Please can anybody tell me where Singapore airport is in relation to a station to take the train. I was.. In Ipoh, take a taxi or local city bus from the station to the Aman Jaya bus station - a taxi will cost around 20-25 Ringgit ($5, 4).  There are several bus stations in Ipoh so make sure you're taken to the right one, all buses to the Cameron Highlands now leave from the Aman Jaya bus station.Fortunately the jungle railway train is rarely full so if you find yourself in the wrong seat you could probably move to a better one.

- KTMB changes its timetables periodically. If you are looking at an old timetable you could turn up at the station and find you have just missed the train.
